These data were generated from latitude and longitude coordinates in degrees, minutes, and seconds as given in the Federal Register. The first version of this data set was created at FWRI in 1998. The current version includes the January 2001 changes, including the Tortugas Ecological Reserve North and South areas as part of the FKNMS, in the boundary description. This version of the file does not include the shoreline. Because the FKNMS shares boundaries with other existing managed areas, every effort was made to use the most precise coordinates available for these boundaries. However, due to precision differences in the definitions, these shared boundaries may appear different in GIS layers that were created based on definitions of the other managed areas. This edition was created using the most precise coordinates available. The following sources were used to make these data: 1) boundary of FKNMS, Federal Register 2) boundary of Everglades National Park, National Park Service (based on 1:24k USGS Quads) 3) boundary of Biscayne Bay National Park, National Park Service (based on 1:24k USGS Quads). These data were created to represent the boundary of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. NOTE: These data, depending on scale, may not match up with other boundary data sets in the region of the FKNMS. While the "FMRI.fl_40k_poly_H" source data was digitized from both NOAA Nautical Charts and USGS Quads, the shoreline of the Florida Keys used herein was digitized solely from NOAA Nautical Charts. Latitude and longitude coordinates for the FKNMS boundary were obtained from the Federal Register. The points were then used to generate a boundary. Not all coordinates were explicitly given in the Federal Register. The description states that the FKNMS boundary "follows the boundary of Everglades National Park" along the portion of the Boundary that is shared with ENP. There is a similar statement for the boundary that is shared with Biscayne National Park. Therefore, boundaries for Everglades and Biscayne National Parks were extracted from existing data sets from the National Parks Service ftp site. The bounding coordinates for the Dry Tortugas National Park were obtained from the park map.
